2020 Vision 03:32
Sometimes if I squint I Get 2020 vision Images of past lives Blurring into view Once I was a sparrow Calling out a warning Once I was the earthworm Crawling underground In a while you’ll get along without me Won’t you? In a while you’ll get along without me Won’t you? Dancing in the lightning The spirit of romancing Caught up in the fire Never looking back Once I was the one who Would light up when I saw you Once I was your lover Painted in your dreams In a while you’ll get along without me Won’t you? In a while you’ll get along without me Won’t you? Sometimes if I squint I Get 2020 vision Images of past lives Blurring into view Once I was your father Once I was your mother Now I’m just a portrait Hanging on your wall In a while you’ll get along without me Won’t you? In a while you’ll get along without me Won’t you? In a while you’ll get along without me Won’t you? In a while you’ll get along

Train 03:29
I took a train Out of the city limits of my hometown I’ve been living upstairs in my head too long And I need A vacation And everyone On every train car as I pass down the aisle I keep waiting for even one purse-lipped smile But they’re glued To the windows Where are you now? Where are you right this moment? Is your train stuck in the station? Or are you well past your destination? I’m thinking back I’m caught in the things I might have said And I’m wishing I’d never been quite so scared To just say What I meant to I glance ahead The future’s no better than in my past I’m still hung up on things I can’t take back And I stare Out the window Where are you now? Where are you right this moment? Is your train stuck in the station? Or are you well past your destination? You sat with me You asked me how my day has been And it snapped me out of my spiraling To just talk With a human And every day A new sun rises to bring new light And I am and I’m not the same inside Cause we’re always Evolving Where are you now? Where are you right this moment? Is your train stuck in the station? Or are you well past your destination?

I slept the deepest sleep I’ve had in so many years A dreamless empty sleep I woke up feeling like I finally put it behind Til I started thinking of you Thinking of you I know I get a little narrow-minded sometimes Running circles in my head And what I thought was so important wasn’t at all Now I’m only thinking of you Thinking of you And all this time I just believed That we were we And you would never leave And through the night and through the day I’m wishing for you Missing you always I never wanted anything to change in my life I would’ve frozen time if I could But now I’m getting older and I’m starting to learn There’s always someone saying goodbye Saying goodbye So in the darkest hours when I’m lying awake Nothing right in my head I open up the secret door reserved in my heart Til I'm only dreaming of you Dreaming of you Dreaming of you Dreaming of you

When the colors run dry In autumn’s sleepy lullaby That’s when I find you My friend for the ages Forgotten somehow Got that mischievous smile That youthful gleaming in your eye That’s how I know you’re My friend for the ages My friend for the now Running around every corner in town to find Reversals of time Everyone’s gotta have someone who knows the way To wind back the day And it pains me to see You struggle growing up with me Neverland lost boys We never get older At least not inside So we find our old path It’s overgrown but made to last Then when the trail ends We go a bit further A bit further each time Running around every corner in town to find Reversals of time Everyone’s gotta have someone who knows the way To wind back the day That’s how I know you’re My friend for the ages That’s how I know you’re My friend for the ages Forgotten somehow Forgotten somehow

I could try loving you with all my heart, all my soul Never listening to reason when there’s reason to go And if you are the sweetest thing that I will ever know Well there’s no turning back from that There’s a lock on the doorway to my love so sincere And you might find a key but it’s been rusting for years So if you bust on through into this cobweb heart of mine Please be kind to the boy inside You stare me down until my knees go limp Cause my sea legs never taught me how to swim When love comes crashing down I dare not stick around for very long I could try loving you with all my heart, all my soul Never listening to reason when there’s reason to go And if you are the sweetest thing that I will ever know Well there’s no turning back from that

Creatures large and small Crawled out from the ocean They walked on solid ground until They could not walk anymore Destruction in their eyes Kill or be the victim Dog eat dog eat cat eat mouse In perfect disharmony Making way for you Making way for you Everything that came before Was all For you Mother Nature laughed And kept her children fighting Survival of the fittest in her Twisted fishbowl world Millions had to die Millions more were lovers Little leaves and branches in your Giant family tree Making way for you Making way for you Everything that came before Was all For you Who will cast the first stone? The blame is nearly endless We’re perfectly evolved for 20,000 years ago The universe was born Without a speck of kindness But for us creatures large and small It’s all We can hope To do Making way for you Making way for you Everything that came before Was all For you

Better 04:53
Sometimes it feels like I’m Swimming up rivers of time to get better If I could just float upstream I could just live in that dream and feel better But memories only hold for so long And soon I’m rushing back out to confront the future It’s deep and dark and rocky and steep And I just can’t believe that it could ever be better My vision becoming so small My hoping the darkness will all wash over Sleepless in a hotel bed The heat of my burning head turning over It was then I first felt the anxiety hit Hit like a brick and I still today feel the ripples The sadness carved into my soul that night It took me down with it so long I thought joy was over I used to be someone who knew his head wasn’t solidly glued to his body It took me til thirty to see The brain can suffer disease like the body But I’m treating it now with love and time Carefully twisting the knobs to bring forth the goodness Finding my hope in the gradual climb Knowing I’m more than the pieces within my body Sometimes it feels like I’m Swimming up rivers of time to get better If I could just float upstream I could just live in that dream and feel better But the past will always be there for me Decades of happiness built up the world around me So I cast off my fear and swim downstream Knowing my future might be just a little bit better

Bugs 03:58
The better part of me Is the the part that let you be But I always had to try To break into your mind And fix what I could find But the source code to your love It’s full of bugs It’s full of bugs That winter night I knew When I opened up to you And you bared your heart to me But I stared down at my feet And I walked off down the street Cause I’ve got my problems too I can’t take your bugs I can’t take your bugs In the cold moonlight I can only imagine Walking side by side Hanging on your inflections I need your bugs I need your bugs I need your

I feel the temperature drop one degree I feel a minuscule shift in the breeze Hypersensitivity Still makes no sense to me Carry you up to our bed after drinks Waiting awake for your sleepy-eyed wink But soon we’ll drift away, my love Soon we’ll drift away If I could whisper to you in the night If I could tell you I love you just right If there was anything to say Anything to make you stay Anyone else might have thrown in the towel But my naïveté feeds my denial Even one smile from you, my love Even one smile would do Wake to the sunlight warming my cheek Watch your heart pulse through your lips as you sleep Even one smile from you, my love Even one smile would do Hypersensitivity Still makes no sense to me

Clipped Wing 03:02
Just like the bird with the clipped wing I’m bound to the ground but I still sing And just like the sun between winter and spring I sing to you Just like the bird who grew too tall I flew from the nest, now I’m so small And just like the breeze between summer and fall I call to you Just like the bird with the clipped wing I’m bound to the ground but I still sing And just like the sun between winter and spring I sing to you

She was going 65 Racing away from city light Everything on her mind Moving too fast this time Nine miles left to go Looping her song Loud on the stereo All night long All night long All night long Flashing back to the past Living a life she almost had Still she can’t shake the sad Feeling her dream won’t last Dream won’t last Dream won’t last Woken up in a fog It was a far too early call When I heard she was gone They were just words too wrong Words too wrong Words too wrong Words too wrong Nine miles left to go Looping her song Loud on the stereo All night long All night long All night long She was going 65 Racing away from city light Everything on her mind Moving too fast this time

about

2020 is an album by Minneapolis songwriter Charlie McCarron. With the help of Kickstarter backers, Charlie recruited 20 musicians to record in their home studios. The result is a blend of chamber orchestra textures with deeply personal lyrics about lost relationships, anxiety, and the search for meaning in life.
